Winter Project

I am working in a paper concerning mobility and art. It is going to be presented at a Women Studies Conference in April. I am wondering who are the art writers working in this area. I came across Rasheed Araeen and Nestor Garcia- Canclini writings, some of their ideas seem relevant to my work.

After the Island

The island was never a tropical paradise, at least while I was there. Rather than feeling in an ideal community, I felt far away from other places and suffocated by water. It was years later, from the distance of an American city, that the island transformed into utopia. From the nostalgia of the exile, the island became a paradise of sunny beaches, enchanted rain forests, and dreamy colonial cities. From the myopia of sporadic, short visits the island became perfect, intense, and fragrant. I was happy in my visits to the island, therefore the island was synonymous for happiness. From the darkness and frigid winters of the modern city, the island became warmer, romanticized, idealized- image, subject- object island of nostalgia.

Every year we design our holiday cards using our travel photographs. In 2010, our theme was food; in 2011, we chose Morocco; and for this year card, 2012, we were inspired by our trip to Turkey.

The night I slept in a camp in the Sahara dunes was one of the most enchanting moments of my life. The Sahara is the largest desert in Africa and during the trip to the tall dunes of Erg Chigaga, we came across a changing landscape of plateaus, gravel plains, and sand. In the vast landscape, that seemed empty and rough, I was suddenly surprised by the encounter with a few nomadic groups in their daily routines. Recognizing people or camels in the desert felt like a mirage, a breakdown of the order on how I had known up to that instant things to be or humans to live.

It was very windy. It was immeasurably hot. The sky was continuously changing. It was very dry... and unexpectedly, it started drizzling. Rain is very rare in the Sahara desert and the rain became heavy for a few minutes before coming to an end. Seeing rain in the desert felt as unusual as stepping into an oasis of date palms and a spring.

We arrived to the camp under a heavy sandstorm. We found shelter in one of the tents serving as a gathering space where the temporary community of foreigners and locals came together to share mint tea, to sit and relax. When the wind and sand storm ended I went for a long walk in the dunes. After a difficult walk in the soft sand, I was there, on my own sand dune. I saw the white sun of the desert, an infinite horizon, a line of camels, nomads and explorers finding their own dune and to sit in silence. I saw people, whose faces I do not remember -- figures wrapped in fabric in the middle of the thousand tones of the sand and the sky.

The food was cooked in the camp, served outdoors, over beautiful handmade rugs, pillows, and low tables. We shared the meal with the locals. They were wearing the blue attire characteristic of one of the Berber people, the blue men of the Sahara. Soon, they started playing music that would mix with the sounds and conversations of our many languages.

I went to sleep in a white bed placed outdoors in front of the tent. While I lay down I looked at the dark sky and little by little I saw the magnificent milky way stretching above me. When I woke up in the morning I had sand all over me, from my nails to my hair. People woke up slowly and as in a state of hypnosis attracted by the dunes we would walk to the highest dune in the Erg Chigaga. When we were too mesmerized, we let ourselves just sink into the sand and surrender to its beauty.

The reason I travel is to encounter the harmony and connection I felt in this place. Then, all the hours of travel and effort to get there made sense.

Sahara means desert in Arabic and the journey crossing the High Atlas mountains to the Great Oasis Valleys took hours. The landscape changed gradually from green to rusty tones, from verdant to dry. The sky became gray and sandy and the landscape was dotted with red kasbahs and simple clay houses. Tamegroute means the last town before the border, as once it was in the frontier with Algeria; yet borders move and the shape of countries are re-configured throughout history.

We visited the slave quarters and the ceramic cooperative, an area still inhabited by descendants of Sudanese slaves. The all hand-made green glazed pottery is characteristic of the area. By looking at the process of potters laboring the clay, while submerging their bodies in the earth, amid black smoke coming from the kilns, I wondered about art and the human condition in the towns of the Sahara. Using local materials and ancient techniques that might not be any longer practical, people work hard and live in scarcity surrounded by the rough desert.

Places of worship
The Roman authorities, viewing Jesus' teachings as subversive, had him arrested, tried, and ultimately punished and executed by crucifixion. As his ideas spread, the Romans believed Christians threatened the status quo, and persecuted them. Early Christian art focused on symbolic representations of the spiritual and became the foundation for future Western art. Before Rome became the center of Christianity, older communities existed in North Africa and the Near East.

The rock formations of Capadokya in the eastern Mediterranean are site of countless places of Early Christian rituals, gatherings, and learning. The painted decoration of the churches and monasteries carved in soft rocks and hidden in the magical landscape of the region, tell us about the belief of the communities that inhabited them. These carved churches also contain a profound history of art and architecture. Earliest wall paintings appear sketch-like using mainly red tonalities and incorporating simple symbols. Through time, the earlier symbols were transformed into complex frescoes full of color, figures, patterns, and narrative compositions. The architectural features of the carved churches became more elaborate: a red line, a circle or a semicircle, became carved vaults, columns, domes and arches.

These sacred places are isolated, remote and in complete harmony with the silence and beauty of the region of Capadokya. These sites survived the hardship of time, persecution, and human attacks. Many icons in the frescoes are faceless as evidence of a history of violence, iconoclasm, and different belief systems.

La idea de ir a Turquía comenzó hace tiempo. Posiblemente la primera vez que leí sobre Aya Sofia o cuando vi unas imágenes de Capadokya. La idea del viaje se fue madurando entre mis visitas al mercado Turco del vecindario y un plan que comenzó hace algunos años con la intención de rodear el Mediterráneo país por país. Definitivamente el que Sharon hubiese vivido en Turquía tuvo influencia en el viaje.

Amanecí contenta. Es un día soleado y apacible, como dándole bienvenida a la primavera. En la mañana fui al mercado turco. Hace al menos dieciséis años que voy al pequeño establecimiento donde solo puedes caminar quince pasos en dos pasillos aglomerados de estantes y barriles del suelo al techo.

Tan pronto pasas la puerta principal te sientes en otro universo, uno más colorido, fragante y delicioso. Los panes y dulces te reciben en la entrada; los quesos y los cortes fríos están en el mostrador adyacente donde encuentras a alguien sirviendo, cortando y pesando productos para algún cliente que espera paciente. Cuando la gente entra saluda inmediatamente: salam alekum! y de detrás del estante el hombre contesta.

Las aceitunas y dátiles continúan seguidos de las mieles, granos y productos secos. Las semillas y nueces están al final y al fondo están almacenados los animales que llegan muertos y los cortan en pedazos para vender por libras. He visto llegar cabras y terneras con cabezas y piernas e inmediatamente he escuchado los sonidos de cortes y golpes mientras los hombres ocupados me recuerdan la carnicería del pueblo chico donde nací.

Hoy no habían muchas especies, parece que aun no han llegado. El comino y el curry se terminaron y algunos barriles están vacíos. Los aceites de oliva vienen de países variados, tales como España, Grecia e Italia. Compré baklava, semillas de cajuil, almendras, dátiles, melocotones y pasas orgánicas y también un aceite de Castilla. Ah! y como no olvidar la lata de garbanzos Goya, que al fin y al cabo, en Nueva York un mercado turco es una tienda de productos variados, muchos de ellos importados.

La linea de pagar estaba lenta con tres mujeres y una niña esperando tranquilamente. Yo me entretuve observando cada pulgada del establecimiento, mientras que el hombre encargado no se daba prisa, sino que se tomaba su tiempo y con una calma imposible en una ciudad agitada le iba dando al lugar un ambiente relajado y placentero: cortaba, pesaba, envolvía y sonreía como si el tiempo no pasara. De pronto las mujeres comenzaron a hablar sobre la niñita llena de salpullidos en el cochecito. Dos mujeres con velos hablaban en ingles elocuentemente mientras que otra sin velo, posiblemente de algún país africano hacia preguntas sobre la niña. De pronto una de las mujeres me pregunta casualmente si he visto los dátiles y yo señalo los dátiles sueltos que están en el área de las aceitunas. Ella me dice que los quiere envueltos y yo señalo hacia el estante donde los dátiles ya están envasados. Las dos notamos inmediatamente que los dátiles están regados en diversos lugares. Me da la impresión de haber encontrado un lugar sin espacio y sin tiempo que se va revelando poco a poco. Cuando al fin llego a la caja registradora el hombre me pregunta si me apetece pan recién horneado. Contesto: shukran. (Una mañana en Brooklyn).

Bringing together visual artists and Nuyorican poets, the exhibition explores the elastic nature of verbal and visual language. Relationships between how we see and the way we describe the world around us are malleable and intrinsically connected. Within this discourse, the ongoing contributions and legacy of the Nuyorican poets offer important insight. (Re)inventors of the vernacular, they continually encompass other art mediums and expand the boundaries between that which is seen, said and experienced in culture.

Together with visual artists whose work also exists in a realm between expression and perception, the exhibition provokes an expansive dialogue on familiar socio-political realities and constructs of everyday life such as: identity, economics, interpersonal relationships, public media and government practices. Incorporating multimedia installations drawing, collage, found objects as well as digital and traditional printmaking, “See What I Mean” offers a look beyond the surface of words and images to reveal deeper understandings.

In attempting to capture the divide between people and places, the coffee house became a metaphor of the ambivalent relationship between the neighbourhood and the terrace, the institution and its audience, and the islander and the metropolis.

In the complex relationship between art, space and people, the terrace is a contested space, one with gates, walls and boundaries, creating a separation between culture and people.

Description:
This project is based on cafe culture and aesthetics of interaction. Coffee houses are spaces were everything is possible, from socializing, talks, writing, planning,organizing,and exhibiting, everything can happen there. The coffee house, as creative space, and the intention to relate gave birth to this series of events, visuals and writings.

Around February 2010, we started meeting in a small coffee house, El Dulce Despertar, located across the Audubon Terrace, in New York. The small restaurant sold coffee and pastries with tables to consume them. They also informally exhibited some artworks by local artist. In that setting, drinking coffee, we started having casual conversations where we got to know each other. The images and text were created based on the exploration of the experience of connectiveness.

The text documents the process and ideas that emerged through out the three months we met in the coffee house. It also gathers pertinent information and preoccupations. One of the main concerns of this work regards how people identify and develop commonalities and a language of relating to each other. The imagery developed in the form of photographs, drawings and events. We had two shooting days. One in the coffee house, that has since then closed down, and a second one in the Audubon Terrace.

The day of the second photographic event we looked and enacted the drawings against a monumental wall of one of the buildings in the terrace. We read the text: 'Going away, coming closer' and took frontal photographs of the poses. The visuals and text are still in progress. The project next stage will include the presentation of the visuals and text in the form of virtual dialogues.
